Don’t let gallstones bother you any longer

Don’t let gallstones bother you any longer

The gallbladder is a small pouch located just beneath the liver, where thebile produced by the liver is stored. The gallbladder is full of bile and the size of a small pear before a meal. I empties bile into gut after meals for digestion of fat.

Bile aids in fat digestion, but the gallbladder is not required essentially for the function. IT acts only as a storehouse of  bile in between meals. In an otherwise healthy person, removing the gallbladder usually causes no noticeable problems with health or digestion, though there is a small risk of diarrhoea and fat malabsorption which improves with time.

Gallstones

Gallstones form in your gallbladder and they resemble pebbles made of concentrated bile materials. Cholesterol, bilirubin, bile salts, and lecithin are all found in bile fluid. Gallstones are typically composed of cholesterol or bilirubin that accumulates at the bottom of your gallbladder and hardens into "stones."

Gallstones can range in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball. They grow gradually as bile washes over them and they accumulate extra materials. Smaller stones, on the other hand, are more likely to cause problems. Smaller stones can move, whereas larger ones tend to stay put. Gallstones that travel may become lodged into bile duct and cause a blockage resulting into jaundice or pancreatitis.

The presence of gallstones is the most common reason for gallbladder removal.

Why do gallstones form?

Gallstones are commonly caused by the following factors:

  • Diabetics
  • Overweight
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Less physical activity
  • Alcohol consumption

Gallstones causes the following symptoms:

  • Indigestion
  • Chills and fever
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • After-meal chest pain
  • Frequent bloating and gas
  • Severe right abdominal region pain.
  • When bile ducts in the bladder become blocked, the stones can cause jaundice.
  • The symptoms may appear at night and are exacerbated by eating high-fat foods.

Gallstones’ Diagnosis and Treatment

Gallbladder symptoms can be the same whether or not stones are present. That is why medical testing is required for accurate gallstone diagnosis.

Gallstones can be easily diagnosed with the help of:

  • Ultrasounds

Who is more susceptible to this?

  • Women are more prone to it.
  • People over the age of 40
  • People who are overweight

Gallstones are not known to dissolve on their own. As a result, gallbladder removal is frequently required. Gallbladder surgery, which removes the entire organ, is the standard method of removing gallstones from the gallbladder. The surgery is done laparoscopically (Key hole surgery). The surgery usually lasts 45 min and the patient is usually discharged the same day or next day depending upon the situation.
